CHECK CHECK... Am I listening???
Every week I will be posting an activity online to help you hone your communication skills... I will try to make them as user friendly and practical as possible... so here is your first activity to practice over the next week!
Take the opportunity to check your ACTIVE LISTENING skills...
Using 1 conversation per day... try the following...
FOCUS your EARS
your EYES
your BODY
your FEELINGS to the person you are listening to
ALLOW them the space to speak...
ACKNOWLEDGE what they have said...
REFLECT - How did you feel about your active listening?
How could you improve your listening in the next conversation?
How did active listening affect the flow, length and depth of your conversation?

Clarifying the Communication Assessment
Interview Location: H602 (morning) / clinic
H608 (afternoon) / clinic
It is expected that you will provide a client to work with who is not another student.
If you haven't organised someone you need to let David know by the end of Monday 26th May!!
Process
After the interview finishes, you will go to the clinic and set up your room while your client waits in reception. The clinic with the open door will be the one you use. You can use the table that is in the clinic, but use your own linen. You can use the pillows in the clinic as long as you use your own pillow cases.
Make sure that you
- Finish your massage by an hour after the time that your interview started at the latest
- Are out of the room before the next student turns up.
- Leave the door to the clinic open.
Assessment Times
(H602)
(H608)

Focus for the period: 8 - 17 April
Tuesday, March 11, 2008
Getting started
When you are communicating with another person (either in or out of a massage context), pay attention to one of the following
- Notice whether you are attending to the other party, and whether they are attending to you. What is the difference between a conversation which is being attended to, and one which is not?
- Be aware of your use of open & closed questions in your conversation. Notice the types of responses that you get when you use a particular type of questioning technique.
